Interventional Pulmonary Services

Care New England offers various services using the latest technology and the most effective treatment techniques to diagnose and treat conditions in the lungs and chest.Team of doctor and nurse discussing a patient diagnosis sitting at the desk in bright modern office-1

Some services include:
Bronchoscopy

A procedure used to examine the inside of lung airways using a bronchoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube fitted with a light and small camera. A more rigid tube may be used if a foreign object may need to be removed. The tube is most commonly inserted through the nose, down the airway, and into the lungs.

Endobronchial Ultrasound

A minimally invasive procedure is used to diagnose infections, cancer, sarcoidosis, and other diseases where lymph nodes are enlarged in the chest. A needle is used in a process called transbronchial needle aspiration to reach parts of the lungs and take biopsy samples. A bronchoscope that includes an ultrasound processor is used to aid physicians in seeing various surfaces.

Procedural Services We Perform

General Diagnostic Bronchoscopy

This involves giving the patient sedation and having a small flexible camera inserted into the trachea (the main windpipe) and visualizing all the main airways on the right and left sides of the chest to look for any abnormalities. If abnormalities are found the pulmonologist might be able to biopsy these areas using various instruments.

Endobronchial Ultrasound

A form of bronchoscopy where the patient is given sedation and a larger flexible camera is inserted into the trachea and the lymph nodes of the chest are able to be seen and biopsied under direct visualization using the ultrasound feature of the bronchoscope.

Pleural-based Procedures

Thoracentesis is a procedure where the physician drains fluid from around the lung. There are numerous reasons why someone may have fluid around the lung including; infection, heart failure, cancer, or inflammation. A small plastic tube is inserted between the lung and the chest wall after numbing the chest wall. Fluid is then removed and the tube is removed.

Intrapleural Catheter

This is also a small plastic tube that is inserted into the space between the lung and the chest wall. It is for patients that have re-occurring fluid buildup. This catheter is “tunneled” under the skin and may stay in the space for months if needed. This is to help keep a patient free of symptoms from the fluid when it reoccurs often and patients have the fluid drained at home or wherever they are.
